Willers resigned from the paper in October 1994 to take up a post in London with the South African Sugar Association. On 1 October 2020 Saville was appointed editor, beneath editor-in-chief Yves Vanderhaeghen. In November 2011, Angela Quintal took over the reins as editor, beforehand having worked as editor of The Mercury. On 1 November 2023 veteran journalist and writer Riquadeu Jacobs took the helm as editor of The Witness. This made it potential in 2000 for the Media24 group - better identified because the writer of Afrikaans-language dailies reminiscent of Beeld, Die Burger and Volksblad - to purchase a 50 percent stake in the corporate which publishes The Witness. Willers's time period coincided with the succession of a third Craib to the chairmanship of the newly created holding firm, The Natal Witness Printing and Publishing Company, in the form of Stuart Craib, Desmond's son. In actual fact Steyn's final yr as editor coincided with the so-called Seven Days Conflict of 1990, which precipitated great destruction, loss of life and dislocation within the Edendale valley just outside Pietermaritzburg.
