[Asian Games] Woo Sang-hyuk ‘Comes Out of the Room and Flies in the Sky’ “I Love High Jump”

Easily advance to the finals with one jump... Compete with Barshim for the championship in the finals on the 4th.

Woo Sang-hyuk (27, Yongin City Hall), a star player recognized by the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee, freely roams the athletes' village and meets many people on days when there are no training or games.

Players not only from Korea but also from many countries ask Sang-hyuk Woo to take pictures, and Sanghyuk Woo responds with his signature smile.

On the 2nd, Woo Sang-hyuk advanced to the finals with only one jump (2m 15) in the men's high jump preliminaries at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China, and said, "Even until the Tokyo Olympics (held in 2021), I was only in the room when I appeared in the all-around competition.

Looking back, it was so disappointing.

“It’s really important to build memories with other players.

It also helps with performance,” he said.

Woo Sang-hyuk, who came out of 'Bangan', flies in the sky with light movements.

For Woo Sang-hyuk, who holds the Korean record of 2m 36 indoors and 2m 35 outdoors, the Asian Games preliminaries were less intense than 'training'.

The men's high jump preliminaries stop once the top 12 are decided.

With the top 12 ranked in the 2m 10, Woo Sang-hyuk advanced to the finals after only running the 2m 15 once.

‘Rival and friend’
Mutaz Essa Barsim (32, Qatar) surpassed 2m 19 once and took first place in the preliminary round.

Because the preliminaries had already ended, Woo Sang-hyuk could not raise the bar any higher.

Instead, they plan to put all their saved energy into the finals to be held on the afternoon of the 4th.

Woo Sang-hyuk said, "This was my first time competing since the Diamond League Final on September 17 (winning with 2m35).

I only jumped once, but it felt good."

He added, "When the high jump is divided into preliminaries and finals, it is important to take care of your body in the middle.

“I will prepare well and show a good performance in the finals on the 4th,” he said.

Woo Sang-hyuk also greeted Barsim, who met him after the preliminaries, saying, “Let’s do our best the day after tomorrow.”

Woo Sang-hyuk participated in his third Asian Games.

As a high school student, he finished 10th with 2m20 at the 2014 Incheon Games, but won a silver medal with 2m28 at the 2018 Jakarta/Palembang Games.

In 2018, when Barsim was unable to participate due to the aftereffects of an ankle injury, Wang Wei (China) won with 2m30.

Woo Sang-hyuk said, "5 years ago, at the Jakarta/Palembang Games, I was only thinking about the gold medal, which gave me a hard time.

I stayed in my room during the entire competition," and added, "Because my mind was heavy, I couldn't develop the skills or posture I wanted.

The important thing in high jump is strength.

“It’s about subtracting it.

It’s the ‘skill of an expert,’ and it’s still difficult, but it was even more difficult back then.”

Currently, Woo Sang-hyuk is a jumper who is classified as a ‘top class’ not only in Asia but also in the world.

Woo Sang-hyuk, who took a leap forward as a world-class jumper starting from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics held in 2021 (4th place with 2m 35), won the 2022 Belgrade World Indoor Championships (2m 34), took second place at the Eugene Outdoor World Championships (2m 35), and won the Diamond League this year.

He wrote a new history in Korean track and field, including winning the finals (2m35).

Woo Sang-hyuk said, “Of course, my goal for this competition is to win a gold medal.

But I think the priority is to show how much I love high jumping.”

He added, “The (spectacular) ceremony is also because I really love high jumping.”

You can also see Woo Sang-hyuk's 'Improvised Ceremony' on the 4th.

If Woo Sang-hyuk's ceremony comes after Barshim's 'butterfly ceremony', Korean track and field will produce a gold medalist in the men's high jump at the Asian Games for the first time in 21 years since
Jin-taek Lee (winner at the 1998 Bangkok and 2002 Busan Games).
