Description
Queer Flixtor: This movie was inspired by William S. Burrough's biographical novel. To start over, he moved to Mexico City in the 1940s. A romantic bond develops between him and Eugene Allerton. In this complex relationship, themes of self-discovery, rejection, and desire are examined.
With his bold and assured directing, Guadagnino divides the book into chapters and uses creative camerawork and visual flourishes to give the screen a lively feel. He gives the protagonist's philandering a sun-bleached seediness in the first act by shooting with an acidic orange shine. A strong concoction of smoke, alcohol, and heroin makes Lee's barfly existence feel sticky and uneasy.
