Toyota Electric car: Is this the future for the Japanese automaker?

The popular Japanese automaker, Toyota is no doubt a leading giant in the global auto industry when it comes to gasoline-powered vehicles. However, the company has recently been showing some deeper interest in the “electric future” by unveiling the very first Toyota electric car – the BZ4X concept SUV. Similarly, the auto giant has also announced plans to debut three new Toyota electric car models in the U.S market any time from now.

Toyota Electric car: the BZ4X concept SUV

In case you missed it, Toyota “stole” the limelight at the 2021 Shanghai Motor Show by unveiling a new electric concept SUV called the BZ4X. This new vehicle is pretty much the very first Toyota electric car because all of the company’s previous projects were majorly focused on hybrid electric cars and fuel cell-powered vehicles. This new BZ4X model is a fully electric concept SUV developed by Toyota and Japanese multinational automaker, Subaru.

The interior of the new Toyota electric car (BZ4X concept SUV) is a beauty to behold on its own

While it may be true that the new Toyota BZ4X concept SUV is currently the company’s only electric car for now, the narrative will soon change in almost no time. Yes, this is due to the fact that Toyota has confirmed that it plans to roll out at least 15 new fully-electric models worldwide before the end of 2025.

Out of these proposed 15 EV models, Toyota has confirmed that customers should expect one electric pickup truck model in the lineup. Similarly, the company revealed that 7 out the 15 proposed EVs will be rolled out under the new “BZ” sub-brand for its fully-electric vehicles. And, if you are wondering; what in the world does “BZ” stand for? Well, the answer is quite simple – BZ is an acronym for “Beyond Zero”.

Now that we finally have a Toyota electric car, what will happen to the “once-popular” Toyota Prius hybrid electric vehicle?

Toyota Electric car: What about the Prius and other PHEVs?

According to various media reports, the new Toyota electric car (BZ4X) is not really a signal to mean that the auto giant will abandon its successful hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) technology. As a matter of fact, Toyota is said to have announced that it plans to roll out a total of 70 new electrified models before the end of 2025. This plan encompasses the proposed 15 fully-electric models as well as regular hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and hydrogen-powered (fuel cell) models.

This simply means that the automaker’s popular Prius PHEV will not be going into “extinction” as many might fear. However, with the unveiling of the new Toyota electric car (BZ4X), the automaker is definitely making a bold statement of possibly moving towards fully-electric cars in the new future.

Toyota has also confirmed this assumption by revealing in recent press statements that its main plan is to finally become a “carbon neutral” car brand before the end of 2050. This is probably a subtle way of informing the general public that it will be having less interest in producing or supporting gasoline-powered vehicles in the near future.
