Citing information on a casino legalization study by Thai lawmakers, which is reportedly due to be presented to the Thai parliament on Thursday (March 28), Bloomberg reported that the average spending of Thai tourists could rise by 52% to 65,050 THB (US$1,785) per trip.
It was separately reported that actual legislation on casino legalization would be submitted to the House of Representatives on the same day.
Bloomberg's story about the study did not specify whether data referencing foreign and domestic tourists were combined. So far, there has been no indication that domestic visitors could be banned from visiting casinos.
The report said that the country's annual tourism revenue may increase by the equivalent of $12 billion. Bloomberg, citing the research, reported that the additional revenue generated may increase the country's gross domestic product growth by 1.16 percentage points.
The move could create at least 50,000 jobs if Thailand agrees to build five casino resorts in different regions, according to a recent proposal by Thailand's labor minister, Pipat Ratchakit Prakhan, quoted by the Bangkok Post newspaper.
Still, the minister said employment and income surveys were needed to ensure domestic customers of Thai casinos could afford to gamble.
Bloomberg noted that a panel of lawmakers reviewing casino issues led by Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amonvivat recommended a number of safeguards to prevent Thais from becoming addicted to betting.
In other comments on the subject, Pattaya News on Tuesday cited the mayor of Pattaya, a popular beach resort southeast of the capital Bangkok, saying it wanted to host a casino complex.
Foramase Ngampiches mentioned the possibility of creating such a venue in Jomtien near Pattaya.
Royal Thai police were quoted as arguing that the casino complex should be built only within a distance of the community and educational institutions.
