Description

Kim Woo-min (22), a member of the Korean swimming team, will compete in the men's 400-meter freestyle at the La Defense Arena in Odes-Bois, Paris, on Monday (local time). Kim will engage in his last training session at La Defense Arena on Wednesday.

The 33rd Summer Olympics in Paris will be held from July 26 to Aug. 11, for a total of 17 days. The opening ceremony will be held at the Seine River in Paris on July 26, and the closing ceremony will be held at the Paris Plaza on August 11. With this event, Paris is the second city after London to host three Summer Olympics (1900 and 1924). France will host a total of six Olympiads, including three Winter Games in addition to the three Summer Games.

Meanwhile, 329 detailed events in 32 sports will be held for this year's event. The newly added events include breakdancing, skateboarding, sports climbing, and surfing. Korea will send about 250 athletes to the Paris Olympics. The figure is down sharply from the previous 354 athletes (232 athletes and 122 executives) from 29 sports in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which placed 16th overall (6 gold, 4 silver, and 10 bronze).

This is due to sluggishness in ball games. While baseball was excluded from the Paris Olympics, men's and women's basketball, soccer and volleyball were all eliminated. As men's handball was eliminated, only women's handball is on the plane to Paris. Nonetheless, Korean swimming is dreaming of a gold medal after Park Tae-hwan. Starting with Hwang Sun-woo (Gangwon Provincial Office), Lee Ho-joon (Jeju City Hall) and Kim Woo-min (Gangwon Provincial Office) are in the team.
Not only individual competitions but also team competitions, Kim is poised to garner a gold medal. Literally, he is seeking to open a golden age for Korean swimming.

The first challenge for Korean swimming is for Kim Woo-min to compete in 400-meter freestyle. Hwang will then aim for the first medal in men's 200-meter freestyle on Sunday, and Hwang Sun-woo, Kim Woo-min, and Lee Ho-joon will aim for the first medal in men's 800-meter medley relay on Sunday. Kim Seo-young will compete in 200-meter individual medley and Lee Ju-ho in men's 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke, respectively.

On the previous day, Kim Woo-min complained to reporters about the poor environment of the Paris Olympics. "It's so hot inside the commuting bus. The air conditioner doesn't allow us to turn on the air conditioner and open the windows, so the temperature inside is really high," he said. "Humanly, I feel exhausted even before going into the water. I even heard that an athlete from another country collapsed on the bus."

Hwang Sun-woo also complained, "It's like a sauna because too many athletes ride on the commuting bus provided by the organizing committee. The bus is getting hotter than outside," adding, "The commuting time takes too long. The windows are taped up and I can't open them, so I think it's harmful to my condition."

The reason is that the Paris Olympics is calling for the "Green Olympics." Under the theme of the Green Olympics, the Paris Organizing Committee says, "Not only do athletes have air conditioners in their villages, but they also have vegetarian meals. In reality, however, negative impacts are inevitable, which is why many athletes are protesting against the plan.

Chung Chang-hoon, president of the Korea Swimming Federation, told reporters at La Defense Arena on the 26th, "I want to say hello with good news that it's a medal the next day," adding, "The first news I'll tell you is that male swimmers will come out of their accommodation in the athletes' village and stay in a hotel right next to La Defense Arena."
