Sales of official lottery products in mainland China fell 13.7% in April from the previous year, according to data from China's finance ministry.
Total sales in April were close to 35.99 billion yuan ($5.21 billion), the finance ministry said on Tuesday. Welfare lottery sales fell 17.4% year-on-year to about 16.29 billion yuan, while sports lottery sales fell 10.4% from a year ago to 19.7 billion yuan.
Total sales of lottery products fell 2.5% year-on-year to about 142.31 billion yuan in the first four months of 2019. Welfare lottery sales fell 9.2% year-on-year to nearly 65.35 billion yuan in the four months to April 30, while sports lottery sales rose 4.1% year-on-year to 76.96 billion yuan.
Only two of mainland China's 31 provinces and cities saw an increase in lottery sales in April, official data showed. Guangdong province, which reported the highest combined sales of welfare and sports lottery tickets last year, saw its April sales drop 16.8% year-on-year.
Guangdong continues to be the leading lottery market in mainland China. Combined sales of welfare and sports lottery tickets reached nearly 13.1 billion yuan in the January-April period, down 7.8% from a year ago.
Guangdong followed, with Jiangsu seeing total lottery sales of about 12.02 billion yuan, a slight 0.3% increase from a year earlier. Official data showed that China's eastern province of Shandong ranked third in the first four months of 2019, slightly above 11.58 billion yuan
