Description
In the early 2000s, when my brother and I were still in school, we heard about a couple whose daughter was a "test tube baby." To us, it sounded "cool." Science had saved them after years of failure. Soon after, one of our aunts also gave birth to their first child, a beautiful boy, through in vitro fertilization (IVF). As an adult, I saw IVF as a viable option for couples (who could afford it) who were struggling to have a child. But the world was very different in the 1960s. This movie Joy is available on Afdah Movies.
The 2024 film "Joy" follows the eventful journey of IVF pioneers as they overcome numerous challenges while conducting experiments and tests to make their vision a reality. Being labeled "monsters" and "devil worshippers" is a minor issue for them. (Because fertilizing a human egg in a petri dish is "unnatural" and against God's plan)
James Norton plays Dr. Robert Edwards, a pioneering British physiologist working to achieve fertilization of a human egg in a laboratory. He teams up with nurse Jean Purdy (Thomasin McKenzie) and doctor Patrick Steptoe (Bill Nighy), a pioneering gynaecological surgeon from Oldham who offers hope to infertile couples trying to conceive a child. But Edwards is soon dubbed "Frankenstein" by the media, and the team faces harsh criticism from all sides, except from expectant mothers who see Edwards as their hope for motherhood.
