Yonhap News reported that Japan is Korea's largest source of inbound foreign visitors so far in 2023, based on the latest data through May 31. In May, Korea received a total of 184,000 travelers from Japan, an increase of 4,863 percent year-on-year, citing statistics from the Korea Tourism Organization.
Tourists from Japan accounted for about 21.2 percent of Korea's 867,000 foreign travelers recorded in May. This means that Japan is the largest supply market for Korea's inbound travel trade "for the sixth consecutive month," the association reported.
Korea's other two major international travelers were China and the U.S., respectively. A total of 128,000 travelers visited Korea from China in May, up 1,039 percent from a year earlier. "The return of Chinese tourists visiting South Korea, particularly public market customers, is expected to help sustain the recovery of casino business in the second half of 2023," brokerage NH Investment & Securities said in a note issued in late May.
According to data from the Korea Casino Association, there are 17 casinos in Korea, 16 of which are open to foreigners only.
