Delta Corp Ltd, India's only publicly traded casino company, announced on Thursday that it will "beginning" casino operations at its Marriot Hotel in Nepal's capital Kathmandu. This will be the first company outside the Indian gaming market.
"Our subsidiary in Nepal has been issued a license to operate casinos in Nepal," Delta Corp confirmed in a filing with Bombay Securities on Thursday.
The entry into the Nepalese market follows a space lease for the Kathmandu Marriott Hotel (pictured), which Delta Corporation signed in 2017 with Everest Hospitality and Hotel Pvt Ltd.
Everest Hospitality and Hotel is a subsidiary of the Nepal-based hospitality company MS Group. At the time the contract was signed, the 214-room Marriott-branded hotel was still under construction and opened in July last year.
Delta Corp had previously said it planned to expand outside India "in line with its strategy to expand in the region." The company, controlled by businessman Jadev Modi, currently operates casinos in the Indian states of Goa and Sikkim.
In a July report, Union Gaming Securities Asia Inc. said Delta Corp's second half 2019 earnings and 2020 business performance had "numerous ... numbers" that led the brokerage to predict "approximately 20% revenue growth" is possible… Lever," said Union Gaming, which said factors included Delta Corp's expansion of its casino business in India, online game development in the country and casino management in Nepal.
Nepal is already hosting several casino venues near its border with the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, including Tiger Palace Resort Bairahawa, which is run by Silver Heritage Group Ltd. Silver Heritage also runs games at Millionaire's Club and Casino in Kathmandu.
